Do you want to differentiate your blog / website from other millions of blog in the Blogsphere? start by displaying an icon next to your URL in the browser address bar!

The Address bar icon is sometimes referred as a favicon – or Favorite Icon.

 

 

How to do that?

First, pick a logo and create a 16×16 pixel icon out of it. You can use any photo editor to do that (i recommend on Irfanview). Save the icon with as a *.ico file.

Second step is to upload the *.ico file to your Wordpress.org hosting service. Make sure you upload the file to the images folder of your active theme.

Next step is to modify your header.php file to point at your new icon file. Open your Wordpress Management console and go to Presentation>>Theme Editor, and pick your header.php file.I suggest that before modifying anything you’ll take a backup of the file, by simply copying it from your Wordpress admin console and pasting it to a Notepad file. You need to modify the “Shortcut Icon” link:

<link rel=”Shortcut Icon” href=”<?php echo get_settings(’home’);?>/<path_to_your_icon_file>” type=”image/x-icon” />

Note that the icon file path doesn’t include your root website URL (eg www.avirtualexit.com). The root URl is being retrieved by the PHP code.

Example:

<link rel=”Shortcut Icon” href=”<?php echo get_settings(’home’);?>/wp-content/themes/Vertigo/vertigo-enhanced-20/images/favicon.ico” type=”image/x-icon” />

Now it’s time to check if the icon is visible in Firefox and IE.

IE users will need to close all browser sessions and delete their browser cache (Tools>>Internet Options>> Delete Cookies and Delete Files). Firefox users will notice the favicon right away.

   You beat me too it. I was going to post an article on how to do it but yours is good enough for me.

   I usually just put it in the head so it available for the whole site, but per theme may be the way to go.
