The “Show Desktop” icon is an extremely useful shortcut that allows us to access our PC desktop in a single click. By default it’s located in the Windows toolbar at the right hand side of the Start button.
Although it looks a quite simple button, the Show Desktop icon is not simple at all. If by coincidence, you delete it by mistake, you’ll need to work hard in order to recover it.
Here’s how you can re-create the Show Desktop icon:
- Click Start and type Notepad in the start search
- Click Enter
- In Notepad, type the following text on individual lines:
- On the File menu, click Save As, and then save the file to your desktop as Show Desktop.scf.
- Use the mouse to drag the Show Desktop.scf icon to the Quick Launch toolbar or another location where you want the shortcut to appear.
- Voila, your Show Desktop icon is alive!

There has been a few times when I or someone else I know have deleted this accidentally. They really should have a checkbox somewhere among the Taskbar properties to restore default Quick Launch icons.
Great tip!
