A common issue many PC owners run into is lack of disk space. It seems that no matter what’s your hard disk’s capacity, it’ll eventually get too full.
This quick tutorial will demonstrate the usage of 2 free tools that help you to free up disk space in your PC: Treesize Free and CCleaner. The nice thing about these two tools is that they actually complement each other, as Treesize maps your hard disk and allows you to identify the most disk space consuming folders, whereas CCleaner allows you to automatically delete unnecessary files and free up space.
Note: Both utilities run well in both Windows Vista and Windows XP.
Treesize is extremely useful when your hard disk gets full, but you are not sure where the space has gone to.
How to use Treesize?
- Download and Install Treesize Free
- After installation completes, run the application
- Click Scan and select an hard disk partition
- Treesize will scan and map the folders in the designated partition. For each folder and its subfolders it will indicate the amount of disk space they occupy.
- Now you can go ahead and delete redundant files to free up space as you see fit.
Important Note: DON’T delete files from the Windows or Vista directories. Doing it might wreck your operating system.
The second utility i would like to introduce is the well known CCleaner. CCleaner is a free system optimization and privacy tool. It removes unused files from your system (including browser’s junk files) – allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. Additionally, CCLeaner lets you easily remove unused programs from your system and also perform same basic Registry repairs.
How to use CCleaner?
- Download CCleaner.
- Define the CCleaner settings in the left pane
- Click Analyze
- CCleaner will analyze your hard disk and prepare a detailed report specifying the files to delete.
- Click Run CCleaner
Comments are welcome.

Good post. I love using TreeSize! I can’t believe Microsoft has still not put anything into Windows that allows you to do that. It’s a really great piece of software that you can’t live without once you install it. I use it on our servers a lot.
