AIM Buddy sounds and how to implement them
I have been having fun with AIM (AOL Instant Messaging) lately. After downloading version 6.1, i decided to customized it a bit. Initially i chose a free custom AIM expression for my buddy icon, then i modified my buddy wallpaper, and finally i replaced the default AIM buddy sound with an extra cool one.
Many AIM users doesn’t seem to be aware that they can use any *.wav file as a their free AIM buddy sound. However, based on previous experience, finding a nice free *.wav file can be challenging. Therefore i prepared the following list of useful web sites from which you can download a free *.wav sound file that you can later use with AOL IM. So here are the best web sites you can download sounds for AIM from:
- Pacdv – free sound effects
- A1 Free sound effects
- Amazing Sounds
- WAV Sound archive (opens a pop-up – so make sure you have your popup blocker turned on)
How to change your AIM buddy sound ?
- Find a *.wav file in one of the aforementioned websites.
- Download the file to any folder in your computer.
- Open AIM.
- Click Edit, then choose Settings.
- Navigate to the Sounds tab.
- In the IM & Chat sound section, use the Browse button to choose the *.wav file you loaded as your favorite buddy sound (repeat this step for both sending and receiving IMs).
- Click Save , then click Apply
Important Note: In order to be able to play your AIM buddy sound, your buddy must be running AIM version 8.0 or higher and set his Buddy List preferences to play other member’s sounds.

Cool tip, but this doesn’t seem to effect what other people hear, only on your local machine. I have been looking for a way to make your “buddy sound,” the one that other people hear, change to any custom wave file.
If you look into Edit>> Settings >> Sounds, you’ll find a section named IM &Chat sounds. Tere go to the “When i send an IM”, then click on Play this sound, and select the .wav file you have downloaded.
That will play the buddy sound.(BTW – it’s explained above, although i might need to add an image, to make it more clear)
6.1 is out? I have 6.0 and it doesnt work

It doesnt work..I tried it but my buddy only heard a normal aim sound.
I followed all the instructions.
yea i dont think you can get custom sounds to play on other people’s pc’s. because just invisioning the way it works, it seems that sound file needs to be uploaded to aim’s server so that they can send that sound clip to anyone’s pc when you send a message… im pretty sure this is why all the buddy sounds are stored and controlled through their website – not the software itself.
Yeah, I had the same problem as Luda, and it sucks, cause my sound is awesome =(
I am having a little trouble because I want to custmize it but how I want to find a nice sound for when I type back and fourth to my friends and how can I add things like a clock and wallpaper on your profile. If you figure it out please e-mail me at Prairiedogs08@aim.com so then we can chat….. Okay thanks a lot for ur time
How can I get a certain part of a song as my sound? Do I have to do something with iTunes?
yea i kno u can get wav files to play on other peoples pc’s cuz alot of my buddies have custom sounds that play on my pc when they sign in. im trying to do the same for my profile. i have aim 6.0 and i cant even find the sound folder for the program.
This doesn’t really help you get others to hear your custom sound, but it explains how to get specific parts of a song. Most computers come with a file called Audacity, but if yours doesn’t, download it here: audacity.sourceforge.net/
This is an audio editor. You can play the audio you choose and find the parts of the song you want to have. You simply highlight and delete whatever parts you don’t want. Once you do this, go to file, export, and on the bottom right of the “save” window, right above the save button, it will give you the option of saving as a specific music file, wav, MP3, ogg, whatever. As for how to get custom IM sounds, google it.
Hey guys, how do I change the sound people hear when I sign off? I have a gun shot when I send IMs, but I want a reload noise when I sign on and off. How do I do that?
heyy i tried it, but how can i make it so i can hear a chorus of the song? and not the beginning?
can you get customs sounds from your own computer?
