Alain from France asks: I heard that it is possible to watch free tv on your PC. Can you recommend on a service that will allow me to watch tv on my PC for free?

Answer:

Indeed, there are several ways to watch free tv online. If your goal is to watch french (or other country) free tv on you computer, you might want to try the JLC Internet TV application.

JLC’s Internet is a free application that allows you to watch tons of freely available channels. All you’ll need is an internet connection (broadband is mandatory) and a PC with a Media Player (Windows Media Player or Real Player) program installed.

After downloading and installing JLC, go ahead and download the free tv channels database and start enjoying free TV on your PC.

Question:
David asks: I would like to build an Internet radio station, can you share a few tips on how to get started?

Answer:

Well, you got me David. Setting up an internet radio station is one of those projects i tend to postpone to less hectic times but never seem to start executing.
Basically you have two main ways to broadcast an internet radio show: you either go for turnkey solutions such as Live365.com or ShoutCast, or you can broadcast from your PC. If you are on a budget, or are really into the entire thing, i would recommend you to go for the second option. In the past i explored a few applications that should allow you to broadcast from your PC. Note that all of them require broadband connectivity:

ubroadcast.com’s Station Manager

Quicktime Broadcaster

WinAmp broadcaster

A topic often overlooked by internet radio amateurs is copyrights infringement. Please mind copyrights when selecting the music and other content you’ll play in your Internet radio station and only broadcast legal stuff.

Good Luck with the build of the online radio and Keep us posted on your progress

This is amazing. Skype is kind of blaming Windows Update "Tuesday Patch" for their 48 hours outage last week...

I was astonished to read today over at the Skype blog that the major Skype last week’s outage root cause was the fact that many Windows users rebooted their PCs in a very short timeframe after receiving patches sent out on “Patch Tuesday” from Windows Update.

Millions of Skype subscribers (paid and free) can’t accept such a lame answer.

I was wondering whether we should expect such outages following the release of Service Release 3 for Windows XP, or other major Windows updates. In addition, i believe the Skype team needs to improve the communication of any service disruption to its users. I know more than 10 Skype users that spent more than half an hour each trying to to tweak their PCs in order to fix what turned out to be a major outage. I hope the Skype team should sit and do their homework on those”unseen bugs”, as last week’s outage was the culprit of Skype’s inconsistent service levels that pissed many of its corporate users off.

Today, i couldn’t connect to my Skype client. First I thought something is wrong with my password , but apparently the reason was a big scale outage in Skype services worldwide today.

As of now (22:30 GMT+2), Skype is still unavailable, and resolution is expected within 12 to 24 hours.

The Skype team is aware of this problem and i bet they won’t sleep much until its resolution. The outage affects millions of people who rely on Skype for communicating with each other. Not longer a freebie, Skype is required to improve its level of service which has been inconsistent lately.

While being a part of entertainment industry and running few media sites I came to know that the 3GP format is getting popular day by day. Many people are well aware of the 3GP video file format that is supported by almost every mobile phone. For those who haven’t heard about 3GP file format and how to play them on mobile phone, I will explain a little about this technology.

3GP is a multimedia file format based on MPEG-4 file format container. It is derived from the MP4 Video format that reduces the file size and provides quality video entertainment.

3GP file format is designed by 3GPP (Third Generation Partnership Project). 3GP is a compressed file format which turns big video files into small size files, thus making possible to play video on your 3G mobile phones. A good quality 3GP video file of Music Song is about 4MB – 6MB file size (the size can be reduced or increased depending on the length of song and quality).

Video Files produced using 3GP converters can be easily transferred to a mobile phone which supports 3G technology via Bluetooth, Infrared, or a data cable (provided by your mobile phone manufacture).

There is a wide range of 3GP converters that help you convert your video files into 3GP file format. The best converter I found so far is ImToo 3GP Video Converter it has wide range of options that helps you produced quality 3GP video files. After converting video files into 3GP file format you can test those files on your computer using player like QuickTime for Windows and Real Media player.

If you are lazy, don’t have time or don’t know how to convert files, you can use already converted files. Just download 3GP Videos from sites like MV3GP and then transfer them to your mobile phone. You will enjoy high quality video entertainment on your mobile without even paying a single penny.

I hope you enjoy reading 3GP information and how to turn your 3G mobile phone into powerful entertainment storage device. Once you downloaded the file and transferred it on to mobile you can easily shared media files with friend or family member.

Get the edge impress your friends that you own the most powerful entertainment packed mobile phone.

This post was written by Yousaf Fayaaz, a SEO/Webmaster from Pakistan, who runs MV3GP, a website focused on 3GP technologies. Yousaf is this week’s top commentator.

Receiving a Joost account wasn't a piece of cake. Read on for some chronicles from the early Joost days :)

Joost™ is a new plattform that offers free-of-schedule TV. It uses secure peer-to-peer technology to stream programmes to your computer. Unlike other TV and video-based web applications, it does not require users to download any files to their computers or browse through complicated websites.

Joost was founded in early 2006 by serial entrepeneurs Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis (in case you didn’t hear those names yet, these are the guys that founded Kazaa! and Skype).

Joost is currently in its beta phase. As of now only a handful of beta users are currently playing around with the tool. Beta Joost accounts are difficult to get. You can register in the Joost website, however they do not state a precise timeframe in which you will be mailed your beta account details and be able to access the system.

Joost Beta users are normally provided with several accounts, that can be transferred as the Beta user sees fit. Today i stumbled upon Joostswap.com, a website that provides a forum that enables Beta users to trade their Joost Beta accounts. I have seen people requesting for 15 euros for a single account ?!, but i am sure that if you are really interested in an account you will be able to trade some goodies (old CDs, DVDs etc’) for it.

During the next couple of weeks, I will try to find myself a Joost Beta account, and keep you posted about my impressions from this great technology. So stay tuned for Part 2 of this blog, on how to get started with Joost.

Oracle (ORCL) has announced thursday that it has agreed to buy Hyperion Solutions (HYSL) for $3.3 billion ($52 a share). Hyperion is a leading maker of Business Intelligence(BI) and Performance Management(PM) solutions.

The acqusition closure ends all speculations regarding which BI company Oracle is intended to buy. Those rumors resulted in Business Objects shares climbing 4%.

The Hyperion deal is the third major acquisition Oracle completes in the last year (Acquired Peoplesoft for $10.3 billion and Siebel for $5.85 billion).

I see two main reasons for this acquisition:

Oracle would like to leverage Hyperions’ leadership, expertise and customer base to become the business intelligence market leader. Oracle already announced that the Hyperion products will be integrated into the Oracle EPM (Enterprise Performance Management) suite.

Oracle would like to leverage existing Hyperion installations at traditional SAP customers in order to extend its footprint within those accounts. Oracle sees great importance in the fact that SAP ERP data will be analyzed with her products.

The real question however, is what customers will do. The question whether Oracle Database customers will migrate their existing BI platforms to Hyperion/Oracle is still unanswered. Independent BI vendors Business Objects and Cognos spokesmen indicated that it’s likely that customers will stick to their current implemented BI suite and won’t be tempted to migrate to the integrated Oracle suite.

Many of us heard about Ning.com an easy-to-use web platform that enables you to build social networking sites. After giving Ning a shot (and being extraordinarly interested about names ) i became curious on what “Ning” means. I was initially under the impression that it might be a japanese or chinese name, but decided to check it throughly.

As always, i headed towards Wikipedia first.

Well, “Ning” is defined as: “Ning can be a pinyin transliteration of a unisex Chinese name”. OK, as english is not my mother tongue, and i am not such an expert in Chinese dialects, i wasn’t sure what “pinyin” means. That’s where Babylon gets into the picture. The word “pinyin” is defined as “transliterated Chinese writing system using Latin characters”. So basically, “pinyin” is a chinese translation for latin languages readers .

I wanted to double check so i googled it a bit and found this at YeahBaby.com.

Now i was sure, “Ning” is a beautiful chinese name that can be used for either a girl or a boy. Unfortnutaly it is not common in the western hemisphere.

Ning.com is a social network that worth watching. Will it be the next MySpace.com ?

Silicon Valley based Ning.com (co-founded by Netscape founder Marc Andreessen) launched today a platform you can use in order to build your social networking website.

I gave Ning.com a quick shot and was happy with the results. In 3 minutes i set up a simple social networking site for Youtube fans .

The 5 steps process was simple and well explained. Compared to MySpace.com, Ning offers a more customizable environment (buddy links, colors selection etc’). Additionally, Ning can be used as a blogging platform. The only backdraw is that you won’t be able to monetized your blog here, as Ning.com takes care (and gets paid for) the advertising.

Update: David Warner, Sr Interaction Design for Ning, corrected my statement on monetizing a Ning social network Site:

“Hey, glad you like it! I’d like to correct one of your points: while we do run advertising on your free network, you can substitute your own ads or remove them altogether for $19.95 a month. Just plug in your own Google AdSense code (or other ad system).

Thanks!

That’s good news!
